La. pergula = arbour, projecting roof. The plants are suitable for climbing up a trellis (Paxton’s Botanical Dictionary).
Etymology of garipensis:
From the Gariep region of South Africa in the Orange Free State where the Gariep Dam is located; or may refer to the Orange River, also known as the Gariep River.
