Etymology of Perlebia:
For Karl (Carl) Julius Perleb (1794–1845), German botanist and physician, associate professor (1821), then full professor of natural history at the University of Freiburg (1823). In 1826 he became director of the Freiburg Botanical Garden and in 1838 he became the director of Freiburg University. His main work seems to have been a diagnostic analysis of the natural plant system classes, families, genera, etc., Clavis, Classium, Ordinum et Familiarum Atque Index Generum Regni Vegetabilis (Diagnostische Uebersichtstafeln des Natürlichen Pflanzensystems: Nebst Vollständigem Gattungsregister) (1838).

From Greek or New Latin makra = 'large' and anthos = 'flowers'; i.e. it has large flowers
