Etymology of Plumbago:
La. plumbum = lead; -ago = resemblance or connection. The roots contain a fatty, leadcoloured dyestuff. Pliny the Elder mentions a plant of this name (probably P. europaea) said to cure an eye disease called plumbum, probably cataracts.
