Etymology of Portulaca:
La. portare = to carry; lac = milk; referring to the milky sap. Another source suggests portula = little door, diminutive of porta = gate; referring to the lid of its capsule that opens like a gate.
Etymology of caffra:
From the Latin caffrorum referring to British Kaffraria, the name given to the area between the Kei and Keiskamma rivers in the latter half of the 19th century
