Etymology of Radyera:
For Robert Allen Dyer (1900–1987), South African botanist, taxonomist and author of 450 publications, mainly taxonomic. After completing his studies at Natal University (1923), he worked as assistant curator, then curator of the Albany Museum Herbarium. From 1931 to 1934, he held the post of liaison officer at Kew Gardens before moving to the National Herbarium in Pretoria, where he became director of the Botanical Research Institute (1944–1963). During this time, he founded the Pretoria National Botanical Garden. He was, inter alia, president of the Pretoria Horticultural Society (1961–1972), and during his career received many local and overseas awards, including the first Gold Medal from the South African Association of Botanists (1973) and an honorary DSc from the University of the Witwatersrand (1976).
