For Willem ten Rhyne (Wilhelmi ten Rhijne) (1647–1700), Dutch physician with the Dutch East India Company. He visited the Cape on his way to Deshima, Japan, wrote An Account of the Cape of Good Hope and the Hottentotes, describing the lives of the Khoisan (then ‘Hottentots’) during the early days of Dutch settlement, visited Japan, and was allegedly consulted by the Japanese emperor, who was very ill, but recovered. Ten Rhyne spent most of his life engaged in botanical and medical studies. He contributed to the great work Hortus Malabaricus (Flora of Kerala – a state in southwestern India). He was the first European to give an account of the Japanese practices of acupuncture and moxibustion, as well as a study of tea.
