Etymology of Rothia:
For Albrecht Wilhelm Roth (1757–1834), German botanist and physician. He studied medicine at the universities of Halle and Erlangen, qualified in 1778, practised for a while, and then worked at the Botanical Institute, University of Jena. His major publications are regarded as his treatise of German flora Tenetamen Florae Germanica (1788–1800) and a book on Indian flora, Novae Plantarum Species Praesertim Indiae Oriental (1821), based largely on botanical specimens collected by the Moravian missionary Benjamin Heyne (1770–1819). He also wrote the third volume of Catalecta Botanica (1806) with Franz Carl Mertens (1764–1831), an algae plant collector who illustrated all the algae and described a number of algal species. In this book, Roth provided the first definition of algae.
