Etymology of Sapium:
La. sapinus = smelling like a fir tree or pines. The word is derived from an ancient Latin name for a resinous pine whose sap lathers like soap. This genus, which is not related to resinous pines, has been historically cultivated as a seed-oil crop for soap production and other tallow products, hence its name.
