Etymology of Schinziophyton:
For Hans Schinz (1858–1941), Swiss botanist and botanical collector. He studied natural history at Zürich Polytechnic, obtaining his PhD in 1883. He accepted a job as botanist to explore South-West Africa, now Namibia (1884–1886), going as far north as the Kunene River bordering Angola, where he also collected plants (1885). On his return to Zürich, he became director of the botanical garden in Zurich (1891), extraordinary professor (1892), and professor of systematic botany from 1895–1928. He published many articles on African plants, two parts of Florae Africae (with TH Durand) Volume 1, Part 2 (1898) and Volume 5 (1895), and edited Viertejahrschrift for 26 years. He made Zurich one of the leading centres for the study of African plants.
Etymology of rautanenii:
Named after Rev. Martti Rautanen (1845-1926), a Russiian born Lutheran Church missionary who collected plants in South West Africa.
