Etymology of Scilla:
Name used in ancient Greek and Latin for Urginea maritima. Related to the Latin squilla, the "squill", and perhaps to the Greek skyllo, I injure, referring to the poisonous bulbs. The medicinal "squill", containing active cardiac glycosides, was obtained from other species of Urginea.
