Etymology of Scilla:
Gk. skilla = squill or sea leek. Ancient Gk. and Latin name for Urginea maritima. Gk. skyllo = I injure; referring to the poisonous bulbs. The medicinal ‘squill’, containing active cardiac glycosides, was obtained from another species of Urginea.
Etymology of megaphylla:
From Latin megas = "large / great" and phyllon = leaf due to the large leaves
