Etymology of Scilla:
Gk. skilla = squill or sea leek. Ancient Gk. and Latin name for Urginea maritima. Gk. skyllo = I injure; referring to the poisonous bulbs. The medicinal ‘squill’, containing active cardiac glycosides, was obtained from another species of Urginea.

From Ondonga in former Amboland, the traditional kingdom of the Ovambo people of northern Namibia
