Etymology of Scilla:
Gk. skilla = squill or sea leek. Ancient Gk. and Latin name for Urginea maritima. Gk. skyllo = I injure; referring to the poisonous bulbs. The medicinal ‘squill’, containing active cardiac glycosides, was obtained from another species of Urginea.
Etymology of polyantha:
From the Greek poly = 'many' and 'anthos' = 'flower'
