Etymology of Staehelina:
For Benedict Staehelin (Staehelin) (1695–1750), a Swiss botanist and professor of physics in Basel. He studied medicine in Basel and Paris, obtaining his doctorate in 1716, and joined the medical faculty. He distinguished himself by his research in cryptogamous plants, and published several works. He was a good friend of Albrecht Haller, Swiss anatomist, physiologist and naturalist. In 1727, he became professor of physics. From his mid-40s, he experienced increasing mental illness, and his position was taken over in 1747 by Daniel Bernoulli (1700–1782), the Dutch-Swiss mathematician and experimental physicist. In 1750, Staehelin wanted to become a vicar but died that year.
