Gk. statike, statikos for an astringent herb, mentioned by Dioscorides; from statikos = causing to stand still; referring to the efficacy of this flower to stop diarrhoea.

From the Latin linum = 'the genus of flax' or 'fishing line' and folium = 'leaf'; i.e. long and thin
