Etymology of Sutherlandia:
For James Sutherland (1639–1719), Scottish botanist, king’s botanist for Scotland, first superintendent of the Royal Botanical Gardens in Edinburgh, and professor of botany at the University of Edinburgh. One report (unconfirmed) states he started his career as a gardener without a college education to care for the university’s Physic Garden. Through self-education, he mastered the subject of botany to such an extent that he published a famous treatise, Hortus Medicus Edinburgensis (1683), which led to his doctorate and professorship. The Physic Garden became the Royal Botanical Gardens in Edinburgh in the early 1700s.
