Etymology of Tribulus:
La. tribulus = three-pointed, a caltrop, originally, a Roman weapon used against cavalry, containing three prongs and a fourth projecting upward. The fruit has four or five hard, single-seeded nutlets, each of which bear two or three sharp spines.
