Gk. tri- = three; pteron = wing; referring to the fruits that are three-winged, so are easily dispersed by wind.

Robust, roughly glandular-hairy annual to 80 cm. Leaves oblanceolate, toothed to pinnatifid, the upper clasping. Flower heads radiate, small, yellow. Achenes 4--5 mm long. Mainly May--Sept. Rocky slopes and flats, NW (S Angola to Pakhuis Mts).
