Etymology of Valeriana:
Presumably La. valere = to be healthy; alluding to the plant’s medicinal use. Valerianus = of Valeria, a Roman province. Publius Valerius Publicola, who helped drive out the Roman kings, is said to have initiated its use in medicine.
