Etymology of Vanheerdea:
For Pieter van Heerde (1893–1979), South African teacher and school principal, active field collector of succulents. He obtained an MA in chemistry and a teaching diploma from the University of Cape Town. After working in a number of lecturing and teaching posts, he accepted the position of headmaster of Springbok School, where he remained until he retired (1926–1952). His special interest was in the succulent plants of Namaqualand, which he kept in his private garden, and later at the Hester Malan Nature Reserve, where he worked briefly from 1966–1967 until his health failed. He sent specimens of local discoveries to contemporary botanists such as Dr Louisa Bolus (1877–1970), who honoured him with the genus Vanheerdea.
