Etymology of Vitex:
La. Vitex, a name used by Pliny the Elder for Vitex agnus-castus. It is derived from the La. vieo = to weave or to tie up, Gk. vico = to bind; alluding to the flexible stems of some species. Vitex agnuscastus is used in basketry.

From the Latin ob- = ‘in opposite’ and ovatus = ‘egg-shaped’; the narrow side is on the side of the stalk
