Etymology of Weinmannia:
For Johann Wilhelm Weinmann (1683–1741), pharmacist and botanist. By age 40, he had become wealthy enough to follow his passion – botany. He established a botanical garden in Regensberg. His major work, Phytanthoza Iconographia (1737–1745), featured more than 1 000 hand-coloured engravings of several thousand plants. Many illustrations were drawn by Georg Dionysius Ehret (1708–1770), later to become one of the foremost floral illustrators of the 18th century, but other illustrators were mediocre. The text was the work of the Regensburg physician Dr Johann Georg Nicolaus Dieterichs. Because of some ‘untrue, even faked images’, the volume is seen as impressive in size rather than quality.
