Etymology of Wormskioldia:
For Morten Wormskjold (1783–1845), Danish botanist, explorer and plant collector. He studied botany at the University of Copenhagen (1806), and made a botanical trip to Greenland (1812–1813), where he collected molluscs, flora, and vascular plants – clubmosses, ferns, conifers – many of which were new to science. In 1815, he sailed with botanist Adelbert von Chamisso and zoologist JF Eschscholtz on Captain Otto Kotzebue’s ship to circumnavigate the world. He left the expedition at Kamchatka (northeastern Russia) in 1816 before it reached North America, and collected there for two years. After his return, for reasons not clear, he gave up natural history. Most of his specimens, journals and notes were destroyed in a fire in 1842, although a few were preserved at the University of Oslo.
