For Christian Schkuhr (1741–1811), German gardener and physical scientist at the University of Wittenberg. He conducted botanical studies throughout his life, and was an advocate of the Linnaean system. He taught himself to draw, engrave and use a microscope (using self-made instruments), and had a keen interest in taxonomy. He published his Botanisches Handbuch (Handbook of Botany) covering flora in the vicinity of Wittenberg, providing names of the flowers in Latin and German; describing their characteristics, habitat, locations and abundance; and the usefulness of the species, such as their economic value or agricultural use.
