La. illecebra = attraction, charm, allurement; referring to the tiny white flowers that are borne in clusters along the stem like an attractive coral necklace.

From the Latin -oides = 'resembling', or 'like'; i.e. resembling the genus Peplis, now Lythrum (Lythraceae)
