Etymology of Steudelia:
For Ernst Gottlieb von Steudel (1783–1856), German botanist and chief state physician for the Kingdom of Württemberg. He studied at Tübingen University, and received his DM in 1805. With Christian Ferdinand Hochstetter (1787–1860), he founded Württembergischer Botanische Reiseverein, aimed at encouraging young botanists to discover and collect plants throughout the world. Steudel’s herbarium contained more than 20 000 species. Steudel and Hochstetter co-authored Enumeratio Plantarum Germaniae (1826), Synopsis Planterum Glumacearum (two volumes, 1853–1855), while Steudel wrote Nomenclator Botanicus (two volumes, 1821–1824), listing of more than 3 300 genera and nearly 40 000 species. After 50 years as a doctor, he was made a knight of the Royal Order and received an honorary doctorate from the University of Tübingen.
