Gk. pteron = wing; thrix = hair. The pappus bristles are plumose (feathery, with fine hairs or bristles).
Etymology of spinescens:
From the Latin spina = 'spine', 'thorn', 'prick' or 'prickle' and -escens = 'becoming like'; i.e. the thorns are incompletely formed
