Etymology of Pterothrix:
Gk. pteron = wing; thrix = hair. The pappus bristles are plumose (feathery, with fine hairs or bristles).
Etymology of thuja:
Gk. thuia, thyia = a kind of juniper, probably a corruption of the thya of Theophrastus; alluding to the use of cedar wood as incense (Meagher), or for a resinous, fragrant-wooded tree.
