Etymology of Raphia:
Gk. rhaphis, rafis, raphia = a needle; almost certainly referring the sharply pointed fruits, but could also refer to the long, pointed fronds of the palm, or perhaps from the Malagasy word rafia, which describes the fibre derived from the leaf stalks of R. ruffia.
