For Carl Gustav (Gustaf) Ekeberg (1716–1784), Swedish ship’s captain for the Dutch East India Company from 1750 who was also a trained chemist, physician, navigator and excellent cartographer. He made 10 trips to India and China between 1742 and 1778 and brought back numerous natural history specimens from his voyages for Linnaeus, with whom he had a close friendship. He wrote a number of books about his travels such as Voyages aux Grandes-Indes dans les années (1773) and Ostindische Reise in den Jahren 1770 und 1771 (1785), as well as a medical book on inoculation. He was elected a Fellow of the Swedish Academy of Sciences and Knight of the Order of Vasa in 1777. He met Swedish botanist Anders Sparrman, who named Ekebergia capensis after him.
