Etymology of Greyia:
For Sir George Grey (1812–1898), English soldier, explorer, governor, politician and patron of botany. He entered the Royal Military College, Sandhurst, in 1826, becoming a captain in 1839. From 1837–1839 he explored part of Australia, as described in his two-volume Journal of Two Expeditions of Discovery in North-West and Western Australia. Grey became governor of South Australia (1841–1845), of New Zealand (1845–1853) and (1861–1868), and of the Cape Colony (1854–1861). Grey was a good linguist and keen naturalist who ceaselessly collected geological and biological specimens for the Kensington Museum and Kew Gardens. He strongly supported William Henry Harvey’s project to describe the flora of South Africa, and Volume 1 of Flora Capensis is dedicated to him.
