Etymology of Hypoxis:
Gk. hyp(o)- = beneath, less than; oxys = sharppointed, sour; alluding to the leaves, which are acid; ‘Quod folia sint acidula (Hypoxis)’.
Etymology of rigidula:
From the Latin rigidus = ‘rigid’ and -ula; an adjectival suffix indicating a diminutive; i.e. 'somewhat rigid'
