In the 1930s, he succeeded Gustav Hegi as editor and also contributed to the Illustrated Flora of Central Europe. A prolific author, he wrote Ziele der Neue Botanik (1939), Nachruf (1955) with Hermann Merxmüller, and A Contribution to the Flora of the Marandellas District, Southern Rhodesia, also with Merxmüller.
