Gk. aloē (from earlier Semitic word alloeh) = bitter. The liquid or dried juice found in the leaves is bitter.

Sprawling, often branched succulent with stems 1--2 m. Leaves narrowly ovate, dark green at most sparsely speckled with white, margins coarsely toothed. Flowers in capitate, branched racemes, nodding, scarlet. Dec.--Feb. Rocky slopes and cliffs, NW, SW (Bokkeveld Mts to Kleinmond).
